Springtime’s inspiring blooms can delight the senses – but for allergy sufferers, they can also trigger uncomfortable reactions. Is there a way to enjoy spring without suffering?
“Yes,” says Farhan Ayoub, MD, an internal medicine specialist at Hoag Medical Group who practices in Huntington Beach. “The first step is determining if you have seasonal allergies.”
“The term ‘seasonal allergies’ sounds straightforward: They’re allergens that affect people during the season. But symptoms of allergies can mimic cold symptoms,” said Dr. Ayoub.
“By testing, you can learn what is causing your symptoms and get started on effective treatments that can significantly improve your quality of life,” he said.
Once you understand what triggers your allergies, you can take steps to minimize exposure. For example, if you’re allergic to mold, it might be time to toss out the kids’ bath toys that are starting to turn black (a good indication that mold is growing). Or, if your allergies are triggered by pollen, you might want to leave your windows closed to reduce pollen exposure.
Dr. Ayoub offers other tips for a sniffle-free spring:
Do your research: Air quality websites and apps provide daily pollen counts and allergen levels, helping you plan outdoor activities accordingly.
Protect yourself: Wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses not only shield your eyes from allergens but also offer added comfort during high-pollen days. During peak pollen season, wearing a mask can filter out airborne particles, reducing the likelihood of allergic reactions.
Clean your space: Using HEPA filters can help purify the air and minimize allergen exposure. Frequent vacuuming and dusting can also help keep indoor allergens at bay. Since pollen can cling to hair, skin, and clothing, showering and changing clothes after spending time outdoors can be beneficial.
Treat symptoms: Using a saline solution nasal rinse can clear nasal passages and alleviate congestion. Over-the-counter antihistamines, nasal sprays, and eye drops may also provide temporary relief from allergy symptoms. For severe or persistent allergies, consulting an allergist for personalized treatment options can help ensure an enjoyable and symptom-free season.
“I have a lot of patients who come to me after weeks of trying to push through. They think, ‘This will end, so why should I bother?’” Dr. Ayoub said. “Ultimately, it’s about improving your quality of life. You don’t have to suffer with these symptoms. Effective solutions are available.”
