Hoag Breaks Ground on Irvine Expansion
The sun shone huge in the sky during the groundbreaking of the Sun Family Campus at Hoag Irvine this summer, a perfect backdrop to what Hoag President and CEO Robert T. Braithwaite calls “the brilliant futurethat lies ahead.”
To a welcoming crowd of city officials, hospital administration, physician leaders and community members, Braithwaite said the plans for the Irvine campus expansion represents a momentous milestone in medicine.
“As we look forward, the future cannot be brighter for the families and leaders in this great city. The newly planned facilities will transform this campus in such a manner that will be unparalleled in the region,” he said at the groundbreaking event. “This expansion will help Hoag deliver on its mission to care for this community and more specifically for each of you sitting here in this audience, your family members, your neighbors, and your friends.”
When completed, the expanded campus will include new state-of-the-art specialty care centers for surgical innovation, cancer, digestive and women’s health, in addition to dedicated urgent care services for cancer patients.
The expansion will bring six new buildings, 155 inpatient beds, eight operating rooms, two additional procedure rooms and 120,000 square feet of ambulatory facilities.
The $1 billion expansion is supported by the largest gift in Hoag history, a $106 million gift from the late Audrey Steele Burnand, and a $50 million gift from philanthropists Diana and David Sun. The generosity of Orange County’s philanthropic community fuels a greater, more empowered health care future for all through the Hoag Hospital Foundation’s ambitious $300 million Boldly Hoag campaign, which has raised more than $153 million toward the project. Three bold, interconnected initiatives are supported by the campaign: elevating the patient experience; recruiting and retaining the nation's brightest health care professionals; and defining and building the future of health care.
According to lead architect Franco Brown of LPA Design Studios, these initiatives come together with the design of the campus to reflect a differentiated patient experience unique to Hoag.
“The idea of boldness and the best in clinicians, technology, diagnostics, and treatment—all that coupled with a humane approach that is expressed from the architecture and the materials you touch and see all the way to the protocols and the spaces that are offered to patients.”
The campus will also support the clinical trials and medical innovations that elevate Hoag as a global destination for medical excellence and unparalleled service.
“Increased access to innovative clinical trials. Advanced treatments. Cutting-edge technology. The Hoag expansion represents our continued commitment to our patients – to stay at the forefront of the most rapidly evolving medical specialties,” said Braithwaite.
