Genetic testing is not just a simple blood draw (or saliva test). Your genetic counselor will do all of the following:
Collect, document and evaluate your family history
Estimate your hereditary risk
Explain inheritance patterns and implications for your family
Assist in exploring the medical and psychological implications of genetic testing
Review costs, benefits and limitations of genetic testing
Provide information about genetic testing options and help you decide what is best for you and your family
Answer questions about issues of privacy, confidentiality and legal protections against genetic discrimination
Determine the best strategy for testing within your family
Select appropriate genetic test(s) and testing laboratory
Help in obtaining insurance coverage for your genetic testing
Interpret your genetic test results, which can be complex
Provide ongoing emotional support and assistance in informing your family in the event of abnormal test results
Assist your physicians in developing a plan for management
Provide a detailed summary letter for you and your physicians
Refer to support organizations, when appropriate
Notify you about genetics research opportunities as they arise
A genetic counseling session is a conversation, where your input is vital towards its success. We encourage you to bring a list of questions to cover during your visit.
Our Genetic Counselors are diplomates of the American Board of Genetic Counseling, have received master’s degrees in genetic counseling and are licensed by the state of California
